25.07.2024:  A Delhi court has issued a summons to YouTuber Dhruv Rathee following a defamation complaint by BJP leader Suresh Karamshi Nakhua. The summons arose from allegations that Rathee referred to Nakhua as a “violent and abusive” troll in one of his videos.

District Judge Gunjan Gupta of the Saket Court issued the notice to Rathee on July 19 in response to Nakhua’s plea. The case is scheduled for its next hearing on August 6.

The Controversial Video

The controversy stems from a video Rathee uploaded on July 7, titled “My Reply to Godi YouTubers | Elvish Yadav | Dhruv Rathee.” In this video, Rathee allegedly made defamatory remarks about Nakhua, who is a spokesperson for the BJP’s Mumbai unit. Nakhua claims that Rathee’s video wrongfully associated him with “violent and abusive trolls,” thus damaging his reputation.

Legal Proceedings

Nakhua’s complaint has led to the court summoning Rathee to address these allegations. This legal action highlights the ongoing tension between public figures and online content creators in India, especially concerning the boundaries of free speech and defamation.

The next hearing on August 6 will determine the progress of this case and whether further legal action will be taken against Dhruv Rathee.
