08.05.2024: Since losing my mom at the tender age of 7, I’ve harbored a deep aversion to Mother’s Day. The memory of her tragic demise, documented in a newspaper clipping from February 25, 1983, has haunted me ever since. The image of the car crash that claimed her life is etched into my mind, a stark reminder of a painful past.
Growing up, I encountered another maternal figure when I was 8 – my stepmother. I cherish her and believe she deserves recognition beyond just one designated day of celebration.
The newspaper article about the accident remains a poignant memory. It depicted the chilling details of the incident, including the icy roads that led to the fatal collision. My mother, Bonnie Feldkamp, was one of the victims, and seeing her name in print alongside the tragic events further cemented the trauma.
Years later, I sought out the article again, hoping to find closure. However, it was a stark realization that her story was reduced to a mere caption under a photo. The headline, “Ice snarls I-275 in Wilder,” seemed detached from the personal loss I experienced.
Reflecting on my journey, I recall a pivotal moment in middle school when I faced legal consequences for my anger issues. The judge’s sentence, requiring me to channel my emotions into writing, marked the beginning of my relationship with words. Writing became my outlet, a way to honor my mother’s memory and give voice to those who deserve recognition.
Now, as a seasoned writer and editor at The Louisville Courier Journal, I find solace in sharing stories of ordinary people who make a difference in our community. Each byline is not just a representation of my work but a tribute to my mother’s legacy. I’ve come to realize that celebrating her doesn’t require a designated day; it’s a constant presence in my life and work.
