31.07.2024: In a devastating turn of events, at least 63 lives have been lost, and many more are feared trapped following massive landslides that struck Wayanad in the early hours today. The heavy rainfall in Kerala continues to pose significant challenges to rescue operations.
Rescue Efforts: A large-scale rescue operation is currently underway, involving 250 members from the Fire and Rescue, Civil Defence, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local emergency response teams. An additional NDRF team has been dispatched to the scene to aid in the rescue efforts.
Government Response: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has assured that all possible resources are being mobilized to coordinate and expedite the rescue operations in Wayanad. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives and has pledged full support from the central government. The Prime Minister has announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured in the landslides.
