Condolences and Accountability After Hathras Tragedy

03.07.2024: In the wake of a tragic stampede that claimed the lives of 121 people during a religious gathering in Hathras, local preacher Narayan Sakar Vishwa Hari, also known as Bhole Baba, has pointed to anti-social elements as the cause. Bhole Baba expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and announced legal actions would be taken.

The Incident

The stampede occurred during a Satsang hosted by Bhole Baba on July 2. Thousands more attendees than expected arrived, leading to chaos as people tried to collect soil that Bhole Baba had walked on. The uneven terrain exacerbated the situation, and local healthcare facilities were overwhelmed by the number of injured and deceased.

Bhole Baba’s Response

In a statement, Bhole Baba said, “The stampede was created by some anti-social elements. I have authorized Dr. A P Singh, Senior Advocate, to take further legal action on this.” He added, “We express our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

Government Action

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a judicial inquiry into the incident, to be led by a retired High Court judge. He promised that those responsible for the lapse will be punished. The Chief Minister visited the injured and the families of the deceased to offer his condolences and support.

Who is Bhole Baba?

Bhole Baba, born Suraj Pal Singh, is a self-styled preacher who was formerly a constable with the Uttar Pradesh police. At 58, he hails from a Dalit family in Bahadur Nagar village of Kasganj district, around 65 km from Hathras. His transformation into Bhole Baba has made him a significant local religious figure.

The Hathras stampede has left a community in mourning and searching for answers. As investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting the victims’ families and ensuring such tragedies are prevented in the future.
