17.04.2024 : Dubai, known for its arid climate, experienced a deluge of rain that inundated the city, causing widespread flooding and disrupting normal life, including aviation operations at Dubai International Airport.

The torrential rainfall, equivalent to a year’s worth of rain in just 12 hours, led to immense flash flooding across Dubai. Shocking videos surfaced, showcasing the usually dry city transformed into a watery landscape, with roads resembling rivers and homes and businesses submerged under rushing water.

The impact on Dubai International Airport was particularly severe, with the airport’s tarmac submerged underwater. The flooding forced airlines, including Emirates and Flydubai, to cancel and delay flights, affecting passengers and causing significant operational challenges.

Emirates, one of the major carriers operating from Dubai, suspended check-in services due to the adverse weather conditions and urged passengers to avoid unnecessary travel to the airport. Passengers already in transit experienced delays, with some stranded at the airport overnight due to limited transport options.

The unprecedented rainfall event, attributed to a larger storm system affecting the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf of Oman, highlighted the vulnerability of regions unaccustomed to such extreme weather. Climate experts warn that such occurrences may become more frequent due to human-induced climate change, leading to increased risks of flooding and other weather-related disasters.

While the rain is expected to taper off gradually, the aftermath of the flooding underscores the need for improved infrastructure and preparedness in regions susceptible to extreme weather events. As Dubai and neighboring areas recover from the impacts of this rainfall, attention turns to long-term climate resilience and adaptation measures to mitigate future risks.
