Governor CV Anand Bose Cancels North Bengal Visit Amid Controversy
18.04.2024 : Governor CV Anand Bose decided to cancel his planned tour of North Bengal following a dispute over its timing and potential impact on the electoral process. He explained that his original intent was to connect with the people during the polls, but the controversy surrounding his visit prompted his decision to cancel. Bose emphasized that he did not want his office to be perceived as a political tool and aimed to preserve its integrity.
Trinamool had filed a complaint with the Election Commission regarding the Governor’s planned visit to North Bengal on Thursday and Friday, the day before and the day of polling. They alleged that his visit to the Lok Sabha constituency could breach election rules. BJP MLA and Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, expressed approval of the Governor’s decision to cancel his trip.
In a statement from the Raj Bhavan, Governor Bose explained his decision, saying, “While I initially planned to travel during the elections to stand by the people, my visit has become politicized. I will not allow my office to be used for political maneuvering.” He added that although no constitutional rule prohibits his movements, he chose to avoid being a political burden.
The Trinamool’s complaint to the Election Commission alleged that the Governor planned to visit Alipurduar in North Bengal. This would violate the ‘silent period’ in effect ahead of the first phase of Lok Sabha polls on Friday. However, Raj Bhavan sources stated that the Governor intended to go to Siliguri instead, which is part of the Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency and not subject to the same restrictions.
Opposition leader Subhendu Adhikari stated that the Governor made the right decision to stay in Siliguri and be accessible to the people. He added that the Governor’s presence could be helpful in case of disruptions during the polls.
The Governor’s statement also assured he would remain connected with the people of Bengal 24/7 through phone and email from the peace room.
