Tragic Road Accident in Uttarakhand: 14 Dead and 12 Injured
15.06.2024: In a heartbreaking incident, 14 people lost their lives and 12 others sustained injuries when a tempo traveller plunged into the Alaknanda River in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district. The vehicle, carrying 26 passengers from Delhi, was en route to Chopta when the accident occurred on Saturday night. Preliminary reports suggest that the driver lost control while navigating a blind turn.
Incident Details
The ill-fated vehicle, registered in Haryana, was part of a trip organized by a travel agent from Gurgaon. The accident happened around 11:30 pm, just ahead of Rudraprayag city. According to Manikant Mishra, Commandant of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), initial assessments indicate that the driver may have lost control due to the challenging turn.
Rescue Operations
SDRF teams swiftly arrived at the scene to conduct relief and rescue operations. While most of the injured are reported to be in stable condition, four individuals with serious injuries have been referred to AIIMS Rishikesh for advanced treatment.
Official Responses
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He confirmed that the injured were immediately taken to the nearest medical center and directed the district magistrate to investigate the cause of the accident. On his X account, Dhami extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his grief, announcing an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to the families of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured. He assured that the state government and local administration are providing all necessary assistance to the victims.
