10.08.2024: In a significant development, T V Somanathan, a seasoned 1987-batch IAS officer, has been appointed as the new Cabinet Secretary of India. The Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet made the announcement on Saturday, confirming that Somanathan will serve in this prestigious role for a tenure of two years, beginning August 30.

From Finance Secretary to Cabinet Secretary

Before this appointment, Somanathan was serving as the Finance Secretary of India, where he played a crucial role in shaping the country’s economic policies. His extensive experience in the finance sector, coupled with his deep understanding of government operations, has made him a standout choice for the position of Cabinet Secretary.

Transition to the New Role

Somanathan will initially serve as the Officer on Special Duty in the Cabinet Secretariat from the date he joins this new assignment. He will succeed Rajiv Gauba, a 1982-batch IAS officer, who has held the post since August 30, 2019.
