17.04.2024 : Amidst the fervor of the upcoming Lok Sabha election, the Supreme Court has reaffirmed its stance on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), stating that they remain accurate unless influenced by human bias. This declaration comes ahead of a scheduled hearing on Thursday, April 18, coinciding with the eve of the first phase of the election.
In a recent session, the Supreme Court dismissed proposals advocating a return to paper ballots as a means to restore public trust in the electoral process, emphasizing that EVMs are capable of delivering “absolutely accurate results” when devoid of human intervention.
Leading the discussion, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, heading a two-judge Bench, highlighted the potential for human weaknesses, including bias, to interfere with the electoral process. However, he firmly asserted that machines, operating independently, can ensure precise and unbiased outcomes.
This statement from the Supreme Court reinforces the reliability of EVMs and underscores the significance of technology in maintaining the integrity of democratic processes. As the nation gears up for elections, the Court’s affirmation of EVM accuracy holds pivotal importance in fostering trust and transparency in the electoral system.
