30.04.2024: Today, the Srinagar-Jammu national highway faced closure due to multiple landslides triggered by relentless rains and snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir. The aftermath of these natural calamities has left a trail of disrupted travel, stranding a considerable number of vehicles along the highway.
A video footage captured the intensity of rocks and debris cascading down mountainsides onto the highway, showcasing the severity of the situation. This crucial highway, serving as the sole all-weather road connecting Kashmir with the rest of the nation, faced blockages at Mehar, Gangroo, Mom Passi, and Kishtwari Pather in Ramban district.
Officials have advised commuters to steer clear of journeys on the highway until clearance operations are completed, with ongoing rains hindering restoration efforts. The consequences of these disasters have been tragic, with reports of a 13-year-old boy losing his life to a landslide in Ramban district and a family in Baramulla district sustaining injuries as their house collapsed.
Moreover, floodwaters have inundated roads in Kupwara district, isolating it from the rest of the Valley and impacting several villages. As a precautionary measure, all schools in Kashmir will remain closed tomorrow, given the persisting rains, flash floods, and landslides affecting multiple areas. Additionally, the Kashmir University has postponed scheduled exams in light of these challenging circumstances.
