Shreya Ghoshal Postpones Kolkata Concert Amid Protests Over Doctor’s Rape-Murder
Playback singer Shreya Ghoshal has decided to postpone her upcoming Kolkata concert as the city grapples with protests following the brutal rape and murder of a young trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Originally scheduled for September 14, the concert, part of the All Hearts Tour, will now take place in October.
Shreya Ghoshal, a National Award-winning artist, took to Instagram to express her deep sorrow over the incident. “I am deeply affected by the gruesome and heinous incident,” she wrote. “Being a woman myself, the very thought of the sheer brutality that she must have gone through is unthinkable and sends shivers down my spine.”
The 40-year-old singer emphasized the importance of standing in solidarity with the community during such a distressing time. “It is absolutely imperative for me to take a stand and join you all in solidarity,” she added.
The horrific crime occurred on August 9, when the body of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital. The victim was reportedly brutalized during a 36-hour shift. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, has been arrested in connection with the case.
The incident has sparked nationwide outrage, with protests and strikes led by resident doctors demanding justice and stricter laws to protect medical professionals. Shreya Ghoshal also shared her prayers for the safety and respect of women, not just in India but worldwide.
For those who have already purchased tickets, Ghoshal assured that they will remain valid for the rescheduled date in October. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, intensifying the ongoing investigation.
