Paris 2024 Olympics: Melanie de Jesus dos Santos Transformed by American Experience
25.07.2024: France’s Melanie de Jesus dos Santos is gearing up for her home Olympics in Paris as a transformed gymnast and person. Following a disappointing 11th-place finish in the all-around at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the 24-year-old has made significant changes in her life and training.
A New Chapter in Houston
After Tokyo, de Jesus dos Santos relocated to Houston, Texas, where she trains with French coaches Laurent and Cecile Landi, and gymnastics superstar Simone Biles. This move has been pivotal in her journey, focusing not just on physical training but also on mental health and self-compassion.
“I really grew up after the Tokyo Games,” de Jesus dos Santos shared in an exclusive interview with Olympics.com. “Training in Houston with Cecile, Laurent, and alongside Simone Biles has been full of new experiences. I’ve learned a lot of positive things and regained my confidence. I think it will help me in the future.”
Achievements and Growth
The changes have already yielded impressive results. At the World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, last October, de Jesus dos Santos delivered a crucial performance on the balance beam, securing a historic bronze medal for Team France.
“It was incredible because we didn’t expect too much, but we had a great competition. Winning this medal just before the Paris Games gives me confidence,” she said.
Overcoming Tokyo Disappointment
The journey from Tokyo 2020 was challenging. De Jesus dos Santos was disappointed with her performance, hindered by injuries and personal struggles. However, she views these challenges as learning experiences.
“I was disappointed with my Olympic Games in Tokyo,” she admitted. “But looking back, I did my best under the circumstances. I’ve learned a lot from that experience.”
Mentorship and Transformation
Training with the Landis and Simone Biles, who has become like a big sister to her, has been transformative. De Jesus dos Santos emphasizes the importance of self-confidence and trust.
“The biggest lesson I’ve learned is not to doubt yourself and to have confidence. It’s the most powerful tool for success in life,” she shared. “You have to trust yourself and others.”
Eyes on Paris 2024
De Jesus dos Santos is excited about competing in her home country and understands the unique opportunity it presents. She’s been featured in pre-Olympic campaigns for brands like Dior and Procter & Gamble, embracing her role as a prominent figure in the lead-up to the Games.
“We will be pampered because we are at home. I’m going to use all the experience I’ve gained over the past two years. I’ve been taught gymnastics again, and I will keep everything positive,” she said.
A New Perspective
As she prepares for her second Olympics, de Jesus dos Santos has a renewed perspective. “Paris will be a success if I am proud of myself because that’s rare for me. The most important thing is to be happy with my work and to enjoy the Games,” she explained. “Even without a medal, I want to enjoy my moment.”
Melanie de Jesus dos Santos’s journey reflects resilience, growth, and the power of transformation. As she heads to Paris 2024, her story inspires many, showing that with confidence and support, anything is possible.
