22.04.2024 : The recent imprisonment of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and JMM’s Hemant Soren has shifted attention to their spouses, Sunita Kejriwal and Kalpana Soren, who are emerging as prominent figures in the INDIA camp during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
Both Sunita Kejriwal and Kalpana Soren were seen alongside other INDIA bloc leaders at a rally in Ranchi, where the opposition launched a scathing attack on the BJP for alleged misuse of central agencies against opposition-ruled states.
During the ‘Ulgulan Nyay Mahrally’ organized by the JMM, which witnessed leaders from 28 political parties in attendance, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Tejashwi Yadav, Bhagwant Mann, and Akhilesh Yadav, two empty chairs were symbolically kept on stage for Mr. Kejriwal and Mr. Soren, highlighting their absence.
Sunita Kejriwal, addressing the gathering, raised concerns about her husband’s health in jail, claiming that he was being denied insulin despite being a diabetic for the past 12 years. She accused the government of attempting to harm her husband and expressed confidence in overcoming what she termed as “dictatorship.”
Similarly, Kalpana Soren accused the BJP of orchestrating political maneuvers to destabilize opposition-led governments, leading to the arrests of Mr. Kejriwal and Mr. Soren ahead of the elections. She conveyed a message from her husband, denouncing the alleged misuse of central agencies to stifle dissenting voices.
The arrest of Mr. Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case linked to the liquor policy scam has not deterred his role as Chief Minister, with the AAP asserting his ability to govern from jail within legal bounds.
On the other hand, Mr. Soren resigned from his position before his arrest in January by the ED in a laundering case associated with an alleged land fraud. JMM leader Champai Soren subsequently assumed the role of Chief Minister, fueling speculations about Kalpana Soren potentially stepping into her husband’s position.
The active involvement of Sunita Kejriwal and Kalpana Soren in political affairs underscores the evolving dynamics within the opposition camp and hints at their readiness to assume more significant roles in the political landscape.
