14.05.2024: The recent collapse of a billboard owned by Bhavesh Bhinde’s company in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar has brought attention to his controversial background. Charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder after the tragic incident claimed 14 lives and left 74 injured, Bhinde faces scrutiny for his past legal troubles, including a rape accusation.
Bhinde, the proprietor of Ego Media, is currently evading authorities, with his cellphone switched off. His extensive legal history includes more than 20 cases, with one of the most serious being the rape allegation against him. Despite these legal battles, Bhinde previously contested as an Independent candidate in the Mulund constituency during the state elections of 2009, revealing 23 cases against him under various acts.
In addition to legal issues, Bhinde’s company has been involved in controversial dealings with the Indian Railways and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Violations of rules and regulations, such as erecting oversized hoardings without proper permissions, have landed Bhinde and his associates in trouble, including accusations of tree-poisoning and tree-cutting.
The recent incident with the colossal 120X120-foot billboard, an unauthorized structure according to BMC regulations, has prompted swift action from authorities. The BMC Commissioner has initiated crackdowns on illegal hoardings across the city, emphasizing the need for proper permissions and adherence to guidelines.
While Bhinde’s agency claims to have received approval from the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Railways), BMC officials stress the necessity of municipal corporation clearance for all billboards within their jurisdiction. The legal complexities surrounding billboard permissions are under Supreme Court review.
In response to the tragedy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced compensation for the victims’ families and pledged government support for the injured.
This incident sheds light on the regulatory challenges and legal responsibilities in the advertising and construction sectors, urging authorities to ensure stringent enforcement to prevent such disasters in the future.
