08.06.2024: Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has expressed his honor and excitement to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in New Delhi. This event marks Modi’s third consecutive term as Prime Minister of India.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Muizzu’s acceptance of the invitation signals a positive direction for Maldives-India relations. In a statement from his office, Muizzu emphasized the importance of this visit in showcasing the strengthening ties between the two nations.

Historic First Visit

This will be President Muizzu’s first official visit to India since he assumed office on November 17 last year. Unlike previous Maldivian leaders who visited New Delhi first, Muizzu initially traveled to Turkiye and China. His visit to India signifies a pivotal moment in his diplomatic engagements.

Formal Invitation

Munu Mahawar, India’s Higher Commissioner to the Maldives, personally delivered the invitation to President Muizzu. During this courtesy call, Mahawar conveyed Prime Minister Modi’s greetings and his anticipation of Muizzu’s attendance at the swearing-in ceremony. President Muizzu expressed his gratitude for the invitation and reiterated his eagerness to further strengthen the close relations between the Maldives and India.

Commitment to Positive Relations

President Muizzu’s office highlighted his commitment to advancing bilateral ties. In a recent social media post, Muizzu congratulated Modi on his electoral victory and expressed his desire to work together for the prosperity and stability of both countries. “Congratulations to Prime Minister @narendramodi and the BJP on the success in the 2024 Indian General Election. I look forward to working together to advance our shared interests,” Muizzu stated.

Past Tensions

Despite recent tensions, including Muizzu’s demand for the removal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives, the President’s upcoming visit indicates a move towards mending and strengthening diplomatic relations.

Anticipated Attendance

The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be a significant event, with top leaders from neighboring countries, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius, and Seychelles, attending as part of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.
