06.04.2024: Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer expressed heartfelt appreciation towards India for extending the export quota, allowing the island nation to import vital commodities. This gesture, amidst recent tensions, signifies the enduring friendship and commitment to bolster bilateral trade.

In a social media post, Zameer thanked EAM @DrSJaishankar and the Government of India for facilitating the renewal of the quota, enabling Maldives to import essential commodities during 2024 and 2025. This move reflects a longstanding partnership and a dedication to enhancing trade relations.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reciprocated, affirming India’s unwavering commitment to its Neighbourhood First and SAGAR policies. The approved quantities of essentials were granted through a unique bilateral mechanism, showcasing India’s support despite diplomatic challenges.

The Indian mission in Malé announced the decision to increase exports in response to Maldives’ request to meet rising demand. Notably, quotas for vital items like river sand, stone aggregates, eggs, potatoes, onions, sugar, rice, wheat flour, and dal have been augmented, emphasizing India’s focus on human-centric development in Maldives.

Despite global export restrictions last year, India continued supplying rice, sugar, and onions to Maldives, showcasing its reliability as a leading exporter. This commitment comes amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics, with Maldives’ recent government signaling a potential shift in alliances.

India’s dedication to fostering bilateral ties and supporting Maldives’ development remains steadfast, aligning with its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. The increased export quotas underscore India’s proactive stance in sustaining essential supplies and reinforcing regional partnerships.
