01.07.2024: Mumbai: Maharashtra has made history with the appointment of Sujata Saunik as the state’s first woman Chief Secretary. Saunik, an IAS officer from the 1987 batch, took over the prestigious position on Sunday, succeeding Nitin Kareer, who retired the same day.

Historic Appointment

Sujata Saunik’s appointment marks a significant milestone in Maharashtra’s 64-year history. With a tenure lasting until her retirement in June next year, she brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role.

Career Highlights

Before her elevation to Chief Secretary, Saunik served as the Additional Chief Secretary in the state’s Home Department. Her extensive career spans over three decades, covering diverse sectors such as healthcare, finance, education, disaster management, and international peacekeeping.

Saunik also contributed to two humanitarian missions of the United Nations in Cambodia and Kosovo, enhancing her global governance perspective.

Ceremonial Handover

The official handover ceremony took place at Mantralaya, the state secretariat in South Mumbai. Nitin Kareer, the outgoing Chief Secretary, passed the mantle to Saunik, marking the beginning of her historic tenure.

Family Legacy in Administration

Interestingly, Saunik’s husband, Manoj Saunik, is also a former Chief Secretary of Maharashtra. This makes her appointment even more remarkable, continuing a legacy of public service within the family.

Women Leading Maharashtra

With Saunik’s appointment, Maharashtra now has women occupying its top two administrative posts. In January 2024, Senior IPS officer Rashmi Shukla became the first woman to serve as the Director General of Police (DGP).

Competitiveness and Selection

Saunik’s appointment was competitive, with senior bureaucrats Rajesh Kumar and IS Chahal also in the running for the Chief Secretary position. However, her extensive experience and proven track record made her the standout choice.
