Labour Minister to Meet Central Trade Unions on Unified Pension Scheme and Employment-Linked Incentive Scheme

Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has scheduled an important meeting with Central Trade Unions (CTUs) on Wednesday, August 27, 2024, to discuss key issues such as the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) and the Employment-Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme announced in the recent budget. This “introductory meeting” aims to address the implementation of these significant schemes that impact workers across the country.

However, the meeting has sparked controversy, as ten CTUs in the opposition camp have expressed strong objections to the exclusion of certain unions. Specifically, the Congress-backed Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) and the All India Forward Bloc’s Trade Union Coordination Centre were not invited to the meeting. The CTUs have criticized this move as a “continuation of the Centre’s unilateral behavior,” highlighting concerns about the inclusiveness of the discussions.

In response, these CTUs have decided to oppose any discussions on the ELI and UPS during the meeting. The lack of representation for all major unions has raised questions about the effectiveness of the dialogue and the government’s approach to engaging with workers’ representatives on crucial policy matters.

As the meeting approaches, the outcome of these discussions could have far-reaching implications for the implementation of the Unified Pension Scheme and the Employment-Linked Incentive scheme, both of which are pivotal for the welfare of workers across the nation.
