Kremlin Rejects Zelenskiy’s Peace Plan, Vows to Continue Military Operation
MOSCOW, August 30, 2024 – The Kremlin has dismissed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s recent statements regarding his plan to end the ongoing war, reaffirming Russia’s commitment to continue its military operations in Ukraine.
Zelenskiy, in a news conference, indicated that his plan, which remains largely undisclosed, would be presented to U.S. President Joe Biden and his potential successors. He mentioned that the ongoing Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk region was part of this broader strategy, which also includes economic and diplomatic measures aimed at compelling Moscow to cease hostilities.
However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov quickly downplayed Zelenskiy’s remarks, stating, “This is not the first time we’ve heard such statements from Kyiv. We are well aware of the nature of the Kyiv regime. We will continue our special military operation and achieve all of our goals.”
Russia remains engaged in repelling the Ukrainian forces that initiated the incursion on August 6, while also advancing its own offensive in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.
Peskov added that while Russia supports India’s stance on the need for a peaceful resolution, he emphasized that the current situation offers no grounds for negotiations. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently voiced his support for an early, peaceful settlement during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, following talks with Zelenskiy in Kyiv.
As the conflict intensifies, the prospect of a peaceful resolution remains uncertain, with both sides firm in their positions.
