Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Nationwide Doctors’ Strike in Protest Against Brutal Crime

17.08.2024: Doctors across India have initiated a 24-hour strike today to protest the shocking rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a nationwide suspension of non-emergency medical services, beginning at 6 AM, in response to the tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Nationwide Strike: Key Details

The strike affects all sectors where modern medicine is practiced, with only essential services being maintained. Routine outpatient departments (OPDs) will be closed, and elective surgeries postponed. The IMA emphasized that emergency care and casualty services will remain operational to ensure that critical patients are still attended to during the strike.

Five Key Demands from the Medical Community

In response to this tragedy, the IMA has issued five major demands aimed at preventing future violence against healthcare professionals:

  1. Stronger Legislation: The IMA is urging the government to pass a Central Act that integrates the 2023 amendments to the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897 into the proposed Hospital Protection Bill of 2019. This would strengthen protections across 25 states.
  2. Hospital Safety Zones: The IMA demands that hospitals be designated as “safe zones” with mandatory security measures comparable to airport protocols. This includes the installation of CCTVs, the deployment of security personnel, and the implementation of strict safety protocols.
  3. Improved Working Conditions: A complete overhaul of the working and living conditions for resident doctors is also being demanded. This includes addressing long duty shifts, such as the 36-hour shift the victim was working, and ensuring safe rest areas for medical staff.
  4. Enhanced Security: The IMA insists on immediate security upgrades in hospitals to prevent such incidents in the future. They highlight the need for secure and protected environments for healthcare workers.
  5. Government Accountability: The IMA has called on the government to take responsibility and implement these changes swiftly to protect medical professionals and ensure their safety.

Governor’s Reaction

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, in a recent interview, expressed his concern over the deteriorating safety conditions in the state. He criticized the state government, holding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accountable for the situation. Governor Bose highlighted the fear among women medical students, many of whom are now reconsidering their careers due to safety concerns. He condemned the violence, stressing that such incidents should not occur in a state renowned for its illustrious history and cultural heritage.

This nationwide strike is a powerful statement by the medical community, demanding urgent action to prevent such heinous crimes and ensure a safe working environment for all healthcare professionals.
