03.08.2024: With the recent Wayanad landslide displacing numerous families, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has announced plans to develop a township for the survivors. The initiative aims to provide comprehensive and exemplary rehabilitation for those affected by the tragedy.

Key Points:

  1. Township Development Plan: During a press conference following a review meeting, CM Vijayan revealed that discussions have already begun at the government level to establish a safe township for the displaced families. He emphasized the need for significant effort and efficient planning to ensure successful rehabilitation.
  2. Comprehensive Rehabilitation: Vijayan stressed that the new township will replace the large human settlement wiped out by the landslide. The government aims to provide all necessary facilities to complete the rehabilitation process as quickly as possible.
  3. Educational Support: Steps will be taken to ensure the education of students from the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Vellarmala, which was destroyed in the landslide.
  4. Global Support: The Chief Minister highlighted the positive response from people worldwide, who have started contributing to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund.
  5. Support from Leaders and Organizations: Numerous individuals and organizations have pledged to help construct houses for the victims. Notably, Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi has offered to build 100 houses, and the Karnataka Chief Minister has committed to constructing another 100. Additionally, the Fruit Valley Farmers Producer Company has expressed readiness to acquire 10 acres of land to support 10 to 15 families by making the land cultivable.

The Kerala government’s proactive approach and collaborative efforts with leaders and organizations aim to provide swift and effective rehabilitation for the Wayanad landslide survivors.
