KC Tyagi’s Candid Views on Sensitive Issues Shake JD(U) and Cost Him Spokesperson Role
In a surprising move, Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] General Secretary K C Tyagi resigned from his position as the party’s national spokesperson, a decision that insiders say was influenced by his outspoken views on controversial topics. Tyagi’s resignation comes after a series of bold statements on sensitive issues that have reportedly placed the party in a challenging position within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Tyagi, a seasoned politician, clarified in an interview that he had already tendered his resignation last year, but the party had asked him to continue in the role. “This year again, I was appointed as the spokesperson. It’s a demanding job, and I believe it’s time for the younger generation to take over,” he said.
However, JD(U) sources suggest that Tyagi’s recent outspoken remarks on ideological matters important to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) put the party in a difficult spot. His comments on issues like lateral entry into government services, the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), and foreign policy matters have raised eyebrows within the alliance.
A senior JD(U) leader explained, “Tyagi is a respected leader, but he began making statements without consulting the party’s high command on critical issues. Topics like lateral entry and UCC are very sensitive, and issuing strong statements without aligning with the party leadership can cause trouble in the alliance.”
Tyagi’s recent joint statement with opposition leaders on the Israel-Hamas conflict also added to the tension. While the government has maintained a balanced stance on the issue, Tyagi, along with other opposition figures, issued a joint statement condemning Israel’s actions. This move was seen as contradictory to the government’s position, leading to further friction within the alliance.
Despite speculation, JD(U) leaders insist there was no pressure from the BJP to remove Tyagi. “The decision was taken suo motu by Nitish Kumar,” a party functionary stated.
Tyagi’s outspoken nature has previously stirred controversy within the alliance. For instance, when Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan criticized a UPSC advertisement on lateral entry, Tyagi’s harsh response was seen as giving the opposition a tool to criticize the government. Similarly, his candid views on the UCC and Agnipath scheme have highlighted JD(U)’s distinct position within the NDA.
Tyagi’s departure from the spokesperson role underscores the delicate balancing act JD(U) must perform as a key ally in the NDA. With Bihar’s 2025 Assembly elections on the horizon, the party is keen to maintain its influence within the coalition while advocating for the state’s interests, such as special status for Bihar.
As JD(U) navigates these complex dynamics, Tyagi’s resignation serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by parties trying to assert their identity within a broader coalition.
