26.08.2024: Over the past nine years, the Indian government has been grappling with a troubling issue: the misuse of fake caste certificates to secure government jobs. According to records accessed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, a total of 1,084 complaints were lodged against individuals accused of obtaining government employment using fraudulent caste certificates. As a result, 92 personnel were dismissed from their positions, highlighting the seriousness of this issue.

The Case of Puja Khedkarn

One of the most high-profile cases in recent times involves Puja Khedkar, who was accused by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of fraudulently availing extra attempts in the civil services examination by manipulating her identity. The allegations against Khedkar include altering her name, her parents’ names, photograph, signature, email ID, mobile number, and address to deceive the examination authorities. This case has brought renewed attention to the broader issue of fraudulent caste certificates.

The data, which spans up to 2019, reveals that the problem of fake caste certificates is widespread. Individuals have allegedly used these fraudulent documents to gain an unfair advantage in securing government jobs, which are often reserved for certain castes under the Indian reservation system.
