29.04.2024: Former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein finds himself back in the spotlight as news breaks of his hospitalization in Manhattan following the overturning of his 2020 rape conviction by a New York court. Weinstein’s attorney, Arthur Aidala, revealed that his client was admitted to Bellevue Hospital for comprehensive medical examinations upon his return to New York City.

Aidala expressed concern over Weinstein’s physical condition, stating, “He’s somewhat of a train wreck health-wise.” The decision to transfer Weinstein to Bellevue came after medical evaluations deemed it necessary for his well-being.

Frank Dwyer, a spokesperson for the New York City Department of Correction, confirmed Weinstein’s custody at Bellevue. Thomas Mailey from the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision further clarified that Weinstein was moved from Mohawk Correctional Facility to Rikers Island jail complex in accordance with the appeals ruling that nullified his conviction.

The New York Court of Appeals cited juror exposure to unrelated evidence as grounds for nullifying Weinstein’s conviction, leading to the voiding of his 23-year prison sentence and the ordering of a retrial for alleged sexual assaults dating back to 2006 and 2013. Despite a separate conviction in Los Angeles in 2022 for another rape, Weinstein remains in custody.

Weinstein’s health issues have been a point of concern, including cardiac problems, diabetes, sleep apnea, and eye complications. Aidala emphasized Weinstein’s mental acuity while highlighting his deteriorating physical health.

Aidala criticized the treatment Weinstein received during his transfer, alleging denial of basic necessities like water and food. However, state corrections spokesperson Mailey refrained from commenting on these allegations.

Doctors at Bellevue Hospital are planning thorough medical examinations before deciding on Weinstein’s potential return to Rikers Island. Aidala intends to propose a retrial during Weinstein’s upcoming court appearance post-Labor Day.
