28.05.2024: Norway has officially recognized a Palestinian state, marking a significant milestone in its relationship with Palestine. Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide announced the recognition on Tuesday, highlighting Norway’s long-standing support for Palestinian statehood. “For more than 30 years, Norway has been one of the strongest advocates for a Palestinian state,” Eide stated.

Support for Palestinian Government

Eide expressed confidence in the Palestinian government’s efforts to reform and govern both the West Bank and Gaza after a ceasefire. He noted the importance of international support, stating, “The international community must increase its political and economic support for Palestine and continue the work for a two-state solution.” Eide also criticized the Israeli government’s lack of constructive engagement.

Formal Recognition in Brussels

The formal recognition was marked by Eide handing a “formal document of recognition” to Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa during a meeting in Brussels. This move is part of a coordinated effort, as Norway, Spain, and Ireland all announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state on May 22, with Spain also completing its recognition earlier today.

Norwegian Prime Minister’s Statement

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized the necessity of a two-state solution for peace in the Middle East. “There will be no peace in the Middle East without a two-state solution,” Støre said, adding that a Palestinian state is “a prerequisite for achieving peace in the Middle East.”

International Reactions

The international community continues to react to recent events, including the deadly Israeli strike on Rafah. The strike has drawn widespread condemnation, with many countries urging for increased efforts towards a peaceful resolution and the establishment of a Palestinian state.
