France Train Cancellations Continue as Search for Vandals Intensifies
Coordinated Arson Attacks Disrupt French Rail Services
27.07.2024: Three out of ten French high-speed trains will be cancelled on Saturday due to a series of “coordinated” arson attacks. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal stated that security forces are actively searching for the “saboteurs” responsible for the disruption ahead of the Olympic Games.
SNCF and Eurostar Services Affected
The national rail company, SNCF, announced that services running on Saturday will face delays of up to two hours on major lines in and out of Paris. Additionally, a quarter of Eurostar services will be cancelled. Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete assured that services would return to normal by Monday morning.
SNCF estimated that around 250,000 passengers were affected on Friday, with as many as 800,000 potentially impacted over the three days. Travelers have been advised to postpone their journeys, as disruptions are expected to last until Monday.
Impact on Passengers
Among the affected passengers was Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who had to fly to the Olympic opening ceremony instead of taking the train. He expressed his frustration, noting that the travel disruptions made the journey significantly harder for many people.
Ongoing Investigation
The sabotage involved setting fire to cabling boxes at junctions on the North, Brittany, and South-West lines, essential for the safe functioning of the rail network. Government officials reported that the operation appeared to be “well-prepared” and organized by a single entity. An attempt to destroy safety equipment on a fourth line was thwarted by rail workers.
Efforts to Restore Services
SNCF staff worked through the night under challenging conditions to repair the damage. Despite their efforts, disruptions will continue, particularly on the North axis, though improvements are expected on the Atlantic axis for weekend returns.
