Former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Passes Away at 80
A Legacy of Leadership and Reform
Kolkata: Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the esteemed Left leader and former West Bengal Chief Minister, passed away this morning at his residence in south Kolkata. He was 80 years old. Bhattacharjee had been battling respiratory issues, resulting in frequent hospitalizations. Last year, he was placed on life support due to pneumonia but managed to recover. He leaves behind his wife, Meera, and son, Suchetan.
Bhattacharjee, a significant figure in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), served as Bengal’s Chief Minister from 2000 to 2011. He succeeded Jyoti Basu and led the state until the landmark 2011 elections, which saw Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress end the 34-year Communist rule in West Bengal.
Political Journey and Contributions
An alumnus of Presidency College, Kolkata, Bhattacharjee began his career as a school teacher before fully dedicating himself to politics. He served as an MLA and a state minister before becoming Deputy Chief Minister. His tenure as Chief Minister was marked by significant victories in the 2001 and 2006 Assembly elections.
Bhattacharjee was known for his simple lifestyle and his commitment to the state’s development. He resided in a modest two-bedroom flat on Palm Avenue, where he spent his final days. True to his wishes, his organs will be donated for medical research. His body will be kept at the CPM headquarters for public homage, with the final rites scheduled for tomorrow.
Economic Reforms and Challenges
During his leadership, the Left Front government adopted more business-friendly policies compared to the previous regime. However, these policies, particularly those related to land acquisition for industrial projects, led to significant political challenges. The opposition, led by Mamata Banerjee, capitalized on the discontent, particularly in the Singur and Nandigram incidents, which contributed to the Left Front’s defeat in 2011.
Condolences and Tributes
Governor CV Ananda Bose, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee were among the many who expressed their condolences. Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “He was a political stalwart who served the state with commitment. My heartfelt condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti.”
Chief Minister Banerjee, acknowledging their long association, promised full ceremonial honors during Bhattacharjee’s last journey. “I am very upset. My condolences to Meera di, Suchetan, and all CPM supporters,” she stated.
Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, and CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury also expressed their sorrow. Yechury described Bhattacharjee’s death as “shattering,” praising his dedication and forward-thinking vision for the party and state.
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s demise marks the end of an era in West Bengal politics. His leadership and reforms left a lasting impact on the state, shaping its modern economic landscape. As Bengal pays its respects, his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
