03.07.2024: Karnataka’s trekking enthusiasts can look forward to a more streamlined experience as the Forest Department plans to introduce online booking for all identified trekking circuits. This initiative, announced by Minister for Forest, Environment, and Ecology Eshwar B. Khandre on July 2, aims to provide multiple options and a hassle-free booking process for trekkers.

Online Booking for All Circuits

Speaking to the press, Mr. Khandre highlighted the upcoming changes to trekking activities in the state. Reflecting on the overwhelming rush at the Kumara Parvatha trekking circuit on Republic Day (January 26) near Kukke Subrahmanya, he emphasized the need for better management. Trekking activities, halted after the incident at Kumara Parvatha, are set to resume from August.

Seasonal Restrictions and Safety

The Minister explained that trekking entry is denied during the monsoon season due to unsafe conditions and to protect the flora that germinates during this period. From August onwards, trekking will be permitted under regulated conditions to ensure the safety of trekkers and the preservation of the environment.

Unified Online Booking Platform

Currently, the tourism wing of the Forest Department manages various trekking circuits, with online booking available for destinations like Kudremukh, Netravathi, Kodachadri, Kurinjal, Gangadikal, and Narasimha Parvatha peaks. However, some circuits, including Ettina Bhuja, lack online booking facilities. To address this, the department will consolidate all trekking circuits into a single website, facilitating easy online bookings. This unified platform will allow trekkers to explore alternative circuits if their preferred choice is unavailable.

Managing Trekking Rush and Environmental Protection

Mr. Khandre noted that some tour operators have been creating excessive interest in trekking, leading to overcrowding during weekends. This surge in popularity has resulted in environmental damage and an increase in plastic waste. To combat this, the department will implement stringent measures to protect the ecology.

Limiting Trekkers and Ensuring Safety

To maintain the sustainability of trekking circuits, the department will limit the number of trekkers based on the circuit’s length, availability of guides, and basic amenities. Advanced technology will be used to ensure that the number of trekkers does not exceed the prescribed limit. In cases of non-compliance, the department will conduct third-party inspections to address any issues.

The Forest Department’s initiative to introduce a unified online booking system for Karnataka’s trekking circuits promises a more organized and environmentally conscious trekking experience. By regulating the number of trekkers and ensuring safety measures, the department aims to preserve the natural beauty of these trails while offering an enhanced experience for outdoor enthusiasts.
