Fadnavis Defends Pune Police in Porsche Crash Case
21.05.2024: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made an unexpected visit to the Pune Police Commissionerate on Tuesday to review the status of the high-profile hit-and-run case involving a drunken minor driving a Porsche that resulted in the deaths of two techies. Amid growing public outrage, Fadnavis emphasized that the police had handled the case appropriately.
During his visit, Fadnavis met with Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police Shailesh Balkawade, and other officials. He received a comprehensive briefing on the incident, which has sparked a significant political debate.
Correct Handling by Police
Addressing the media, Fadnavis confirmed that the Pune police had correctly invoked Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code. He urged the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) to treat the accused, who is 17 years and 8 months old, as an adult due to the severity of the crime.
“I reviewed the JJB’s order and found it astonishing how they could handle such a serious case in this manner. We consider it shocking,” Fadnavis remarked.
Arrests and Legal Actions
Fadnavis also discussed the arrests of three individuals associated with Cosie Bar and Restaurant: owner Prahlad Bhutada, manager Sachin Katkar, and bartender Sandeep Sangle. They were detained for allegedly serving alcohol to a minor, and the establishment was subsequently raided and sealed by the Excise Department.
The police have contested the JJB’s initial decision in a higher court, which has ordered a review of the case by the JJB. The board is expected to reconsider its order within the next few days.
Commitment to Justice
Fadnavis assured that the police are determined to ensure justice is served, stating, “The police are very firm that they will go to all lengths to ensure justice in this matter that has resulted in public outrage. They invoked IPC Section 304 from the beginning, with no pressure or delay.”
Addressing Opposition Allegations
Responding to allegations from opposition leaders like Congress’ Vijay Wadettiwar, Pune MLA Ravindra Dhangekar, and Shiv Sena-UBT MP Sanjay Raut, who claimed that the accused was served pizzas while in detention, Fadnavis stated that CCTV footage from the police station would be reviewed. Anyone found guilty of misconduct will face consequences.
Public Safety Measures
Fadnavis highlighted that the Pune Municipal Corporation, Pune Police, and State Excise Department will examine public concerns regarding bars and pubs in residential areas. They will enforce strict measures against establishments flouting norms, including verifying the age and IDs of customers, and potentially shutting down those in violation.
