17.05.2024: The Election Commission has served a show-cause notice to Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a former Calcutta High Court judge

and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Tamluk Lok sabha seat, over “improper, injudicious, and undignified remarks” against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The remarks, made at a public meeting in Haldia district on Wednesday, were flagged for potentially violating the Model Code of Conduct.

Background of the Incident

On Wednesday, during a public meeting in Haldia, BJP candidate Abhijit Gangopadhyay made comments about Mamata Banerjee, which were later shared widely online through a viral video. The remarks were quickly condemned by the Trinamool Congress, which accused Gangopadhyay of making “misogynistic” and “sexist” comments. The BJP has countered, claiming the video is “fake.”

Trinamool Congress’s Reaction

The Trinamool Congress promptly filed a complaint with the Election Commission, labeling the remarks as “shameful and egregious.” In their letter, they argued that Gangopadhyay’s comments demonstrated a “misogynistic mindset” and lacked decency and morality. The party demanded criminal proceedings against Gangopadhyay and sought his ban from attending public meetings and rallies. They also requested directives to prevent BJP candidates from making personal and objectionable remarks.

Election Commission’s Notice

The Election Commission’s notice highlighted that Gangopadhyay’s comments were “improper, injudicious, beyond dignity in every sense of the term, and in bad taste.” It stated that the remarks appeared to violate the Model Code of Conduct and the advisory issued on March 1. Gangopadhyay has been given until 5 PM on May 20 to respond to the notice.

Political Implications

The controversy has sparked significant debate, with various political figures weighing in on the matter. The incident underscores the heightened tensions in West Bengal as the state prepares for voting on May 25. The BJP’s nomination of Gangopadhyay for the Tamluk seat has drawn increased scrutiny, especially in light of his contentious remarks.
