26.04.2024: Egypt is dispatching a high-level delegation to Israel with the aim of brokering a ceasefire agreement with Hamas in Gaza. The move comes amidst concerns of a potential new Israeli offensive near Rafah, a southern city bordering Egypt, which officials warn could lead to dire consequences for regional stability.
During the visit to Israel, Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel intends to emphasize Egypt’s stance against Israel’s troop deployments along Gaza’s borders with Egypt, according to an Egyptian official speaking anonymously to discuss the mission openly.
Earlier, Lebanon’s militant group Hezbollah targeted an Israeli military convoy with anti-tank missiles and artillery along the border, resulting in the death of an Israeli civilian, as confirmed by Hezbollah and Israel’s military.
Tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border have escalated, with Israel targeting senior Hezbollah figures in recent months, leading to displacements and casualties on both sides. The ongoing cross-border conflict has claimed civilian lives and resulted in military casualties.
In Gaza, Israeli airstrikes in Rafah caused casualties, while preparations for a potential offensive in the city have been observed with the massing of Israeli tanks and armored vehicles in the vicinity.
Elsewhere, a ship in the Gulf of Aden faced an attack, likely linked to the Israel-Hamas conflict, while Hamas expressed willingness to consider a truce lasting five years or more with Israel.
The Israel-Hamas conflict stemmed from a raid into southern Israel, resulting in casualties and abductions. The ongoing war has claimed thousands of Palestinian lives, including many civilians, underscoring the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region.
