04.04.2024: A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck China’s Qinghai province, sending ripples of concern through the region. Here are the details of the seismic event:

According to reports from the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) and state-run media Xinhua, the earthquake hit Mangya city in northwest Qinghai Province at 8:39 am local time. The epicenter was located at 38.39 degrees north latitude and 90.93 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 10 km.

As of now, there have been no reports of casualties or significant damage caused by the earthquake.

This seismic activity follows closely after a magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck neighboring Taiwan, resulting in tragic consequences with at least nine fatalities and over 1,000 injuries reported. The earthquake in Taiwan also triggered tsunami warnings across the region, reaching as far as Japan and the Philippines, although these warnings were later lifted.

Wu Chien-fu, director of Taipei’s Central Weather Administration’s Seismology Center, noted that this earthquake was the strongest since a devastating 7.6-magnitude quake in September 1999, which claimed around 2,400 lives and remains one of Taiwan’s deadliest natural disasters.

Authorities and seismologists are monitoring the situation closely, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and response measures in earthquake-prone regions like Qinghai and Taiwan.
