08.07.2024: In a recent development, the Delhi Police has registered an FIR against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra over a controversial post targeting National Commission for Women (NCW) Chief Rekha Sharma. The post, which has since been deleted, showed Sharma arriving at the site of a stampede in Hathras, accompanied by a man holding an umbrella for her.

Details of the FIR

The FIR was filed by the Intelligence Fusion & Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police on Sunday. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (PRO) Suman Nalwa, Moitra has been booked under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), 2023. This section pertains to actions, gestures, or words intending to outrage the modesty of a woman.

NCW’s Response

The NCW had taken suo motu cognizance of Moitra’s remarks, which they described as extremely outrageous and a violation of a woman’s right to live with dignity. The Joint Secretary of NCW stated that the Commission observed the ‘remarks’ prima facie attract Section 79 of the BNS.

The Controversial Post

On July 4, Moitra posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing Rekha Sharma at the stampede site. The video, which was later deleted, led to a strong reaction from the NCW, which demanded immediate action. The NCW’s post on X called for an FIR against Moitra and requested a detailed action report within three days.

Moitra’s Response

Despite the FIR, Mahua Moitra remains undeterred. In a response to the NCW’s post, Moitra wrote: “Come on Delhi Police please take action immediately on suo motu orders. Am in Nadia in case you need me in next 3 days to make a quick arrest. I Can Hold My Own Umbrella.”

This incident highlights the ongoing tension between the NCW and Mahua Moitra. As the investigation progresses, it remains to be seen how this will impact Moitra’s political career and her relationship with the NCW. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
