Clarification on Atal Setu “Cracks” by Mumbai Infrastructure Body
MMRDA Addresses Concerns Over Atal Setu Approach Road Cracks
22.06.2024: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has issued a clarification regarding reports of cracks on the approach road connecting Atal Setu in Ulwe. These cracks, found on a service road and not the bridge itself, are minor and pose no threat to the structure.
Political Allegations and Response
Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole has accused the BJP and MMRDA of corruption and compromising public safety due to poor construction quality. Patole inspected the site and claimed the road had caved in by a foot, attributing this to corruption and poor workmanship
MMRDA and BJP Rebuttal
Both the BJP and MMRDA have rebutted Patole’s claims, emphasizing that the cracks are on the approach road, not the bridge itself. The MMRDA noted that during an inspection on June 20, 2024, minor longitudinal cracks were found on the road surface near Ramp 5, which are easily repairable.
Quick Repair Promised
MMRDA has assured the public that the repair works on the minor cracks will be completed within 24 hours, ensuring the approach road’s safety and usability.
Atal Setu: A Significant Infrastructure Project
The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, also known as the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL), is a significant infrastructure project inaugurated in January this year. The six-lane, 21.8 km long bridge, including a 16.5 km sea link, connects South Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, built at a cost of ₹17,840 crore.
While political allegations have stirred public concern, the MMRDA’s clarification and prompt action aim to reassure citizens about the structural integrity and safety of the Atal Setu bridge. The focus remains on maintaining the highest standards of infrastructure safety and addressing any issues swiftly.
