CBI Seizes Documents After 11-Hour Search at Kolkata Doctor’s House
26.08.2024: In a significant development in the ongoing investigation surrounding the August 9 rape-murder of a young doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted an extensive 11-hour search at the residence of the hospital’s former Principal, Sandip Ghosh. The CBI, which is probing both the heinous crime and alleged financial irregularities under the former principal’s tenure, seized multiple documents during the raid.
The Search Operation
The search at Sandip Ghosh’s home in Beliaghata began early in the morning and continued until late evening. As the CBI officers exited the premises, they carried away a substantial number of documents. When asked about the findings, a CBI official cryptically remarked, “Bahut kuch hai” (Quite a lot), hinting at potentially incriminating evidence.
Widening the Investigation
The investigation has expanded beyond Ghosh’s residence. Searches were also conducted at the homes of former medical superintendent Sanjay Vashisth and 13 other individuals in and around Kolkata. The CBI’s anti-corruption unit targeted not only the homes and offices of these individuals but also those involved in supplying materials for patient care and hospital management. These searches are part of a broader inquiry into alleged financial misconduct at RG Kar Hospital during Ghosh’s tenure.
Corruption Allegations and Legal Proceedings
Sandip Ghosh has been under intense scrutiny, with multiple corruption allegations against him, in addition to the rape-murder case. The Calcutta High Court recently handed the investigation over to the CBI, following the state government’s initial inquiry into these corruption claims. Ghosh has already undergone a polygraph test as part of the investigation.
On the day of the search, Ghosh was questioned once again by a team of seven CBI officers. Former medical superintendent Sanjay Vashisth and another professor from the forensic medicine department were also interrogated.
Legal Implications
The CBI has named Sandip Ghosh and three Kolkata-based private entities—Ma Tara Traders, Eshan Café, and Khama Louha—in its First Information Report (FIR). They face charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating), along with provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The August 9 Tragedy
The tragic rape and murder of the postgraduate woman doctor on August 9 sent shockwaves across the nation, leading to widespread protests by doctors and civil society. A Kolkata Police civic volunteer has been arrested for the crime, but the CBI’s involvement has brought to light possible tampering of the crime scene, raising concerns about a cover-up.
As the investigation progresses, the CBI’s findings could have far-reaching implications, not only for the individuals involved but also for the reputation of the institution at the center of these allegations.
