23.06.2024: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has filed a police complaint against an Instagram influencer for performing yoga at Sri Darbar Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, in Amritsar. The incident, which occurred on June 21, coinciding with International Day of Yoga, has sparked outrage among the Sikh community.
SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami condemned the act, stating that it showed a deliberate disregard for the sanctity of the holy site and hurt Sikh sentiments. He emphasized the importance of respecting the religious and cultural significance of Sri Harmandir Sahib, a place revered by Sikhs and pilgrims from around the world.

- The SGPC lodged a formal complaint against the woman, identified as Instagram influencer Archana Makwana, for performing yoga within the sacred ‘Parikrama’ area of the Golden Temple.

- The SGPC took disciplinary action against three ‘sewadars’ (employees) for allowing the yoga practice to take place, citing dereliction of duty.

- Amid the controversy, Archana Makwana issued a public apology, expressing regret for her actions. Her photos performing yoga in the temple’s ‘Parikrama’ had gone viral, prompting widespread criticism.

- Golden Temple General Manager Bhagwant Singh Dhangera confirmed that CCTV footage showed Makwana entering the temple at 6:57 a.m. and performing yoga at 7:04 a.m. She stayed in the ‘Parikrama’ for almost an hour without paying reverence during her visit.
