Bollywood Faces Financial Strain: Karan Johar Calls for Change
07.07.2024: Filmmaker Karan Johar recently highlighted the pressing need for a revamp and redefinition of theatrical success in Bollywood. With high expectations and financial strain, the industry is grappling with significant challenges.
Bollywood is enduring a tough phase, reminiscent of the line, “Yeh dukh kaahe khatam nahi hota be” (why is this grief not ending). Despite a few hits, like 2023’s top-grosser Jawan raking in Rs 1,160 crore, other films have struggled, with Fighter only managing Rs 358 crore.
Amid these discussions, Karan Johar, a leading filmmaker, shared his thoughts in a conversation with journalist Faye D’Souza on her YouTube channel. He emphasized the need for change in Bollywood’s approach to filmmaking and box office success.
“Audiences now have specific tastes and expect a certain type of cinema. For a film to succeed, it must perform well in A, B, and C centers; relying solely on multiplexes won’t cut it,” Johar explained.
He pointed out the rising costs in filmmaking due to inflation and the high fees demanded by top actors. “With around 10 viable actors in Hindi cinema asking for exorbitant fees, the math just doesn’t add up when their films open to only Rs 3.5 crore. Despite this, we must continue making movies to sustain our organizations,” Johar added.
Johar noted the changing trends in Hindi cinema, where the industry seems to chase the latest successful genre. “After the success of action films like Jawan and Pathaan, everyone is rushing to make similar movies. This herd mentality undermines conviction and innovation,” he said.
He stressed the importance of catering to a diverse audience, including those in Tier 2 cities and smaller towns, who prefer rooted Indian cinema. “Alienating these audiences with urban-centric films can limit box office success. While urban cinema has its place, it must be made at a sustainable cost,” Johar advised.
Karan Johar’s latest production, Kill, is currently in cinemas, navigating these challenging times for Bollywood.
