BJP’s Abhijit Gangopadhyay Criticizes Opposition’s Absence in Tamluk Election Race

05.05.2024: Purba Medinipur: Following his nomination from the Tamluk Lok Sabha seat, BJP candidate and former Calcutta High Court judge, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, made remarks targeting the opposition’s apparent lack of activity in the current election campaign. He expressed respect for the opposition but noted their absence from the contest.
“I do not underestimate them (opposition), but I find that they are not on the ground. They are absent from the contest,” he stated.
The BJP has put forward Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay as its candidate from Tamluk, while the TMC has nominated Debangshu Bhattacharya for the same Lok Sabha seat.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, TMC’s Adhikari Dibyendu emerged victorious from Tamluk with 724,433 votes, defeating BJP’s Sidharthashankar Naskar who secured 534,268 votes. TMC garnered 50 percent of the votes.
Voting for the Tamluk Lok Sabha seat is scheduled for June 25 in Phase 6 of the elections. West Bengal, which sends 42 MPs to Parliament, is conducting voting in all seven phases. The first two phases took place on April 19 and 26, covering six Lok Sabha seats in Bengal.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, TMC won 34 seats in the state, with BJP securing only 2 seats. The CPI (M) won 2 seats, and the Congress won 4.
However, in the 2019 general elections, TMC’s seat count dropped to 22, while BJP’s tally surged to 18. The Congress secured only 2 seats.
