Bangladeshi TV Journalist Found Dead in Dhaka Lake: A Tragic End to a Life Cut Short

In a shocking and tragic incident, Sarah Rahanuma, a prominent newsroom editor at Gazi TV, was found dead in a lake in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The 32-year-old journalist’s body was discovered floating in Hatirjheel Lake, a well-known area in the country’s capital.

Local media, including the Dhaka Tribune, reported that Sarah’s body was discovered by a man named Sagar, who immediately brought her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). “I saw the woman floating in Hatirjheel Lake. Later, she was brought to DMCH, where doctors declared her dead,” Sagar recounted.

The news of Sarah’s death has sent shockwaves throughout Bangladesh, with many viewing it as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by journalists in the country. Sajeeb Wazed, the son of ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, condemned the incident as “another brutal attack” on freedom of expression. In a post on the social media platform X, Wazed stated, “Rahmuna Sara, Gazi TV newsroom editor, was found dead. Her body was recovered from Hatirjheel Lake in Dhaka city. This is another brutal attack on freedom of expression in Bangladesh.”

Sarah’s death has raised concerns about the safety of journalists in Bangladesh, especially in light of recent events. Gazi TV, the media house where Sarah worked, is a secular news channel owned by Golam Dastagir Gazi, who was recently arrested. The timing of Sarah’s death has led to widespread speculation and calls for a thorough investigation.

In the hours leading up to her death, Sarah posted several troubling messages on Facebook. In one post, she tagged a man named Fahim Faysal and wrote, “It was nice having a friend like you. God bless you always. Hope you’ll fulfill all your dreams soon. I know we had a lot of planning together. Sorry, can’t fulfill our plans. May God bless you in every aspect of your life.” In another post, she ominously wrote, “It is better to die than to live a life akin to death.”

The circumstances surrounding Sarah’s death remain unclear, and the incident has been reported to the Hatirjheel police station. Inspector Bachchu Mia, who is in charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, confirmed that her body is currently being held at the DMCH morgue.

As the investigation continues, Sarah Rahanuma’s tragic death has brought renewed attention to the struggles faced by journalists in Bangladesh, particularly those who dare to speak out. The media community and the public alike are demanding justice for Sarah, as the nation mourns the loss of yet another voice silenced too soon.
