At 3 PM on Sunday, I Will “Arvind Kejriwal’s Big Announcement
31.05.2024: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced in a press conference today that he will surrender at 3 PM on Sunday, as his interim bail in the Delhi liquor policy case ends.
Key Points of the Announcement
Kejriwal, who was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court, stated, “The day after tomorrow, I will leave my house around 3 PM to surrender. We are fighting against tyranny, and if I have to sacrifice my life for the country, do not mourn.”
Health Concerns
Kejriwal shared that his health has deteriorated significantly during his 50-day imprisonment, leading to substantial weight loss and ongoing health issues. He also mentioned that he was denied diabetes medication while in jail. “I was in jail for 50 days, and in those 50 days, I lost 6 kilos… Even after being released, I have not regained my weight,” he said, adding that doctors are concerned about his health.
Commitment to Delhi’s Welfare
Despite these personal challenges, Kejriwal reassured the public that the welfare of Delhi’s residents remains his top priority. He promised that essential services and initiatives such as free electricity, Mohalla clinics, hospitals, free medicines, and women’s free bus travel will continue without interruption. “Even though I won’t be among you, do not worry. All your work will continue,” he stated. “I may not be with you physically, but your work will not stop.”
Emotional Appeal
Kejriwal also made an emotional plea for the well-being of his elderly parents, urging the public to keep them in their prayers. “My parents are very old… If you pray for my mother daily, she will surely remain healthy,” he said.
Background on the Case
Arvind Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a corruption case related to the now-scrapped Delhi liquor policy. The probe agency alleges that Kejriwal played a key role in drafting the policy and soliciting bribes in exchange for liquor licenses. They claim that the AAP received kickbacks of ₹100 crore, which were then used to fund its election campaigns in Goa and Punjab.
Political Reactions
The AAP and Kejriwal have denied all charges, calling the arrest and case a “political vendetta,” especially as it occurred weeks before the election. The arrest has also sparked a political spat between the ruling BJP and the opposition INDIA bloc, led by the Congress and including the AAP.
