Assam YouTuber Arrested Over Controversial Bihu Song: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Reacts
In a recent development, Assam-based YouTuber and singer Altaf Hossain was arrested for allegedly inciting hostility among the state’s ethnic communities through a controversial version of a Bihu song. Hossain, known for his bold takes on traditional music, sparked outrage with lyrics that many believed to be divisive and inflammatory.
The controversial song, which drew criticism from various ethnic groups, reportedly bore similarities to a Bangladeshi protest anthem titled “Desh Ta Tomar Baaper Naki” by Ethun Babu and Mousumi Chowdhury. The phrase translates to “Does the country belong to your father,” and Hossain’s rendition of the Bihu song carried a similar tone, raising concerns about its intent and message.
Despite the backlash, the song gained significant traction on social media, with thousands of views across platforms. However, the popularity of the song didn’t shield Hossain from legal consequences. The Assam police acted swiftly, leading to his arrest on charges of promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, and ethnicity.
The arrest also elicited a strong response from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. In a public statement, he emphasized the importance of respecting the cultural norms and traditions of the Assamese community. “To integrate well into society, one must respect its core characteristics. If anyone promotes our civilization, traditions, or cultural practices in a way that deviates from our norms, it will not be accepted. For example, if Bihu were to be altered into ‘Miya Bihu’, it would not be accepted by the Assamese people,” he stated.
The incident highlights the delicate balance between creative expression and cultural sensitivity in a diverse society like Assam. As the story continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the powerful role that art and media play in shaping public discourse and the responsibility that comes with it.
