19.04.2024 : The recent controversy surrounding Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s health conditions during his time in Tihar Jail has raised questions about his access to insulin, dietary choices, and medical care. As a Type 2 diabetes patient, Mr. Kejriwal reportedly faced challenges in receiving adequate medical attention and maintaining a regulated diet behind bars.

The ongoing legal battle between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has brought to light several critical issues. The ED had opposed Mr. Kejriwal’s plea for regular video consultations with his doctor, alleging that he deliberately consumed sugary foods to manipulate his health condition for medical bail.

In response, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Mr. Kejriwal, countered these claims during a court hearing. He emphasized that Mr. Kejriwal had followed a prescribed diet chart recommended by his doctor before his arrest. This diet included insulin injections, necessary for managing his diabetes, which Mr. Kejriwal claimed he had been deprived of for almost a month while in jail.

The dispute also delved into specific aspects of Mr. Kejriwal’s diet, such as the consumption of mangoes and sweets. His lawyer refuted the ED’s allegations, stating that out of 48 home-cooked meals allowed by the court, only three included mangoes, with none provided after April 8. Additionally, Mr. Kejriwal’s use of Sugar Free, an artificial sweetener, instead of white sugar in his tea, was highlighted to clarify misconceptions.

The ED argued that Mr. Kejriwal’s dietary choices did not align with the prescribed diet chart and that the jail provided adequate medical facilities. However, Mr. Singhvi pointed out discrepancies in these claims, emphasizing that the limited instances of mango consumption were within permissible limits.

The hearing concluded with Mr. Kejriwal expressing concern about his deteriorating health and the delayed resolution of his medical needs. The court deferred its verdict to Monday, prompting further anticipation regarding Mr. Kejriwal’s access to insulin and the overall handling of his health concerns during his incarceration.

The underlying political context of Mr. Kejriwal’s arrest, linked to allegations of involvement in a liquor policy scam, adds complexity to the situation. The AAP has vehemently denied these charges, labeling them as political vendetta, especially given the timing of his arrest ahead of crucial elections.

As the legal battle continues, the focus remains on ensuring Mr. Kejriwal’s right to adequate medical care and the resolution of the controversies surrounding his jail diet and insulin access.
