10.05.2024: In a recent turn of events, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been granted interim bail by the Supreme Court, allowing him a window till June 1. The decision comes in light of his request to be released from jail to actively campaign during the ongoing Lok Sabha polls.
The apex court, comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, acknowledged the delay in the Enforcement Directorate’s action against Kejriwal, highlighting that while an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) was filed in August 2022, his arrest only took place in March this year.
During the hearing, Justice Khanna noted the extended period of time Kejriwal spent in custody, stating, “For about one and a half years he was there… The arrest could have been made afterward or before. 21 days here or there should not make any difference.”
Kejriwal, who has been in judicial custody at Tihar jail since March 21 on charges related to a money laundering case linked to an alleged liquor policy scam, had appealed for bail to actively participate in the election campaigning.
The Supreme Court’s decision to grant interim bail until June 1 allows Kejriwal the opportunity to engage in electoral activities before he is required to surrender on June 2, the day following the conclusion of the seven-phased Lok Sabha elections.
This development marks a crucial update in the legal proceedings surrounding Arvind Kejriwal’s case, providing him with a temporary reprieve to fulfill his political commitments during this crucial period.
