12.05.2024: In a sharp exchange of words, Home Minister Amit Shah countered Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s insinuation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is paving the way for Shah to assume the Prime Minister’s office in the future. The verbal duel between the leaders unfolded following Kejriwal’s comments during his first press conference after being granted interim bail.

Kejriwal, taking aim at Modi’s leadership and the BJP’s ‘one nation, one leader’ narrative, questioned the party’s stance on the prime ministerial face. He pointed out Modi’s upcoming 75th birthday and the BJP’s rule of retirement at that age, citing the cases of LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, and Sumitra Mahajan.

Responding to these assertions, Shah clarified that there is no such age limit rule in the BJP’s constitution and reaffirmed Modi’s leadership continuity. Shah dismissed Kejriwal’s optimism about Modi stepping aside and emphasized that Modi will continue to lead the country.

Shah also highlighted the temporary nature of Kejriwal’s interim bail, granted to enable him to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections. He pointed out that the bail doesn’t absolve Kejriwal from the liquor policy case, for which former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia is also implicated.

Regarding Kejriwal’s perception of the interim bail as a clean chit, Shah remarked on the Delhi Chief Minister’s purported misunderstanding of the law. He noted the limitations imposed on Kejriwal during this period, such as restrictions on office access and the need for permission from the Lieutenant Governor for official matters.

The Supreme Court’s consideration of the interim bail was influenced by the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, as it deemed it impractical to conclude the case or deliver a verdict on Kejriwal’s petition against his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at this stage. The bail remains in effect until June 1, after which Kejriwal is required to surrender before the agencies.
