NIRF Rankings 2024: IIT Madras, AIIMS, JNU Among Top Institutes

12.08.2024: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 results are out, with the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras) leading the charge as India’s top institution. This marks the ninth edition of the NIRF rankings, and IIT Madras has secured the number one spot in both the overall and engineering categories for the eighth consecutive year.

Top Performers in NIRF 2024

  • IIT Madras has once again dominated the rankings, maintaining its stronghold in the engineering domain and overall categories.
  • Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore claimed the second position overall, followed closely by IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Kanpur in third, fourth, and fifth places, respectively.
  • IIT Kharagpur ranked sixth overall, while AIIMS Delhi took the seventh spot, standing out as the top institution for medical studies.
  • IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati secured the eighth and ninth positions, respectively.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) rounded out the top 10 with a strong performance in the overall category.

New Categories Introduced

This year’s NIRF rankings introduced three new categories:

  • Open Universities
  • Skill Universities
  • State-Funded Government Universities

These additions aim to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of India’s educational institutions.

Highlights from NIRF 2024

  • Jamia Millia Islamia retained its third rank in the University category for the third consecutive year, showcasing its consistent performance.
  • Jamia Hamdard emerged as the top university for pharmacy.
  • IIM Ahmedabad was ranked as the best business school in India, with two IITs also making it to the top 10 for management courses.
  • IIT Roorkee was recognized as the best college for architecture courses.

Looking Ahead: Sustainability Rankings

In a notable announcement, AICTE chairperson Anil Sahasrabudhe revealed that the Ministry plans to introduce ‘sustainability rankings’ starting next year, emphasizing the growing importance of sustainable practices in education.

The NIRF 2024 rankings once again highlight the dominance of IITs and AIIMS in India’s higher education landscape. With new categories and the promise of sustainability rankings in the future, the NIRF continues to evolve, offering a detailed and dynamic assessment of the nation’s educational institutions.
