Russia Set to Discharge Indian Recruits Fighting in Ukraine After Modi-Putin Talks
09.07.2024: In a significant development, Russia has agreed to discharge and facilitate the return of all Indians fighting for the Russian army in Ukraine. This breakthrough was achieved during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Moscow, sources revealed on Tuesday. The matter was addressed by PM Modi in his private dinner meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.
Key Visit Amidst Ongoing Conflict
PM Modi’s visit to Russia marks a crucial moment as it is his first since the Ukraine war began in February 2022. The visit also signifies a renewal of ties with a time-tested ally. Modi last visited Russia in 2019, and the two leaders previously met at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Uzbekistan in 2022.
Addressing Concerns of Indian Recruits
The issue of Indians fighting for Russia in the Ukraine war has been a significant concern for New Delhi. Recent reports indicate that many Indians have fallen victim to job frauds, being tricked and forced by scammers to join the Russian army, which allows recruits from other countries. Some recruits even posted a video on social media detailing their ordeal and pleading for government intervention.
Reports state that four Indians have been killed in the war, while 10 have returned to India. Approximately 35-40 Indians are still believed to be in Russia. The Indian Foreign Ministry has been pressing hard to bring back these recruits, with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar describing the issue as a “very deep concern” for India.
Diplomatic Efforts and Breakthrough
India has consistently maintained that the recruitment of Indian nationals in the Russian army during a conflict is not in line with the India-Russia diplomatic partnership. The Indian government has called for the early release and return of all such Indian nationals and has demanded an end to such recruitments in the future. The breakthrough achieved during PM Modi’s visit provides significant relief for the families of the recruits still stuck in Russia.
Casualties and Impact
Two Indians, Ashvinbhai Mangukiya and Mohammad Asfan from Gujarat, were reported killed in the Ukraine war earlier this year, with two others reported killed in June. The agreement to discharge Indian recruits and facilitate their return is a crucial step in addressing the humanitarian concerns arising from this conflict.
