India’s Strong Stand: Demarche to Germany Over Comments on Arvind Kejriwal’s Arrest
India has taken a firm stance against perceived interference by Germany regarding the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. This move reflects India’s commitment to upholding its sovereignty and judicial independence.
The Indian Embassy in Berlin issued a demarche to Germany after the latter’s Foreign Office made comments on Kejriwal’s arrest, which India deemed as meddling in its domestic affairs. This diplomatic action underscores India’s assertion of its right to handle internal matters without external interference.
Following the issuance of the demarche, the German Deputy Ambassador to India was summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to register India’s protest officially. George Enzweiler, the Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy, was called to explain the situation, highlighting the seriousness of India’s concerns.
In response to Germany’s comments on Kejriwal’s arrest, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that India is a democratic nation with a robust legal system. It reiterated that the rule of law will prevail, ensuring a fair trial for Kejriwal as per democratic principles.
The German Foreign Ministry’s remarks, expressing expectations of a fair trial for Kejriwal, were met with India’s assertion of its judicial processes and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. This exchange of statements reflects the diplomatic dialogue between the two countries on legal and democratic standards.
The backdrop of Kejriwal’s arrest in the Delhi liquor policy case adds complexity to the situation. The case involves allegations of a policy providing disproportionately high profit margins, leading to legal scrutiny and Kejriwal’s remand in custody for interrogation.
Despite this diplomatic tension, India and Germany maintain cordial relations, particularly in strategic areas like defense technology. However, India’s unwavering stance on protecting its internal affairs and judicial independence remains a priority in its foreign relations.
The demarche to Germany serves as a reminder of India’s commitment to its democratic values and legal processes, ensuring that its internal matters are handled without external interference.
