26.05.2024: City girl Anasuya Sengupta has brought immense joy to her friends and admirers by clinching the Best Actress award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Her remarkable achievement marks a historic moment for Indian cinema and celebrates her outstanding talent in the film industry.

Anasuya Sengupta, hailing from Lake Gardens, has come a long way from her days at Jadavpur University, where she would often spend time chatting with friends near the arts building. Now, she stands on the other side of the Cannes red carpet, making history as the first Indian to win the Best Actress accolade for her captivating role in Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov’s film, “The Shameless.”

Expressing her overwhelming emotions, Sengupta shared, “I am so incredibly overjoyed and proud to have been able to make so many people so proud! Waiting to be back with my family at the soonest. Thank you for your congratulatory messages,” as she boarded her flight home on Saturday.

The momentous occasion unfolded at Theatre Debussy, where the results in the Un Certain Regard section were announced. Tanmay Dhanania, also part of the film’s cast, captured her reaction on his phone as her name was announced, symbolizing the culmination of her dedication and hard work.

“The Shameless” is a Hindi film that showcases Sengupta’s exceptional talent as she portrays Renuka, a vagabond seeking solace in a sex workers’ community after fleeing a brothel. Her versatility and commitment to her craft have been recognized not only in front of the camera but also behind the scenes as a production designer in notable projects.

Reflecting on her journey, friends and colleagues recall her early days in acting during her undergraduate years at JU. Anjan Dutt, a seasoned director, praised her talent and reminisced about her debut in “Madly Bangalee,” highlighting her multifaceted abilities.
