11.05.2024: In a recent development, the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government has facilitated Amritpal Singh, head of ‘Waris Punjab De’ and currently detained under the National Security Act (NSA), to file his nomination for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections. This move comes as Singh seeks to contest as an independent candidate from Punjab’s Sri Khadoor Sahib constituency, scheduled for polling on June 1, the final phase of Lok Sabha election 2024.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s administration, in response to a petition filed in the Punjab & Haryana High Court, confirmed that Singh has been provided with two sets of nomination forms and necessary paperwork, which were filled and signed by him on May 9. Additionally, he was granted permission to meet his proposer and Advocate at Dibrugarh Central Jail, as informed by DAG Punjab, Arjun Sheoran to the Court.

Acknowledging the compliance with the petition’s requests, Justice Vinod S Bhardwaj deemed the petition as “infructuous,” as reported by Live Law. The Superintendent of Central Jail Dibrugarh is mandated to administer the oath to Singh in accordance with legal provisions and issue the Certificate for Receipt of Oath, subsequently sending the original form of the Oath to the Returning Officer of Khadoor Sahab, Punjab.

It’s noteworthy that Singh is one of ten members of the pro-Khalistani outfit currently incarcerated in Dibrugarh since March 19, 2023, following their arrest under the NSA as part of a crackdown on the outfit.

Despite the legal complexities surrounding his detention, Singh’s pursuit of contesting in the Lok Sabha elections underscores the political dynamics in Punjab. His nomination filing, facilitated by the Punjab government, marks a significant development amidst the charged atmosphere of the upcoming polls.
