98 Indians Among Hundreds Dead During Hajj Pilgrimage in Mecca: MEA
Tragic Losses Amidst Heat Waves at Hajj 2024
22.06.2024: The annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca has been marked by a somber note this year, with more than 900 pilgrims reported dead due to extreme heat waves. Among them, 98 are Indian citizens, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
MEA Confirms Indian Casualties
MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, in a press briefing, confirmed that out of the 175,000 Indian pilgrims participating in the Hajj, 98 have tragically passed away. Jaiswal attributed these deaths to natural causes, chronic illnesses, and old age. He emphasized that the extreme conditions and pre-existing health issues were significant factors in these fatalities.
Rising Temperatures and Heat-Related Illnesses
Reports indicate that the extreme heat, with temperatures soaring above 50 degrees Celsius, has been a major cause of concern. Several deaths have been linked to heat-related illnesses, exacerbated by the scorching conditions that pilgrims faced during the Hajj period from May 9 to July 22.
Comparative Data and Broader Impact
Reflecting on the previous year, Jaiswal noted that 187 Indian pilgrims died during Hajj 2023. This year’s numbers, although lower, still highlight the ongoing risks associated with the pilgrimage. Saudi Arabia has not officially released the total number of deaths, but various countries, including Jordan and Tunisia, have reported fatalities among their pilgrims due to the intense heat.
The Significance of Hajj
Hajj is a significant religious duty for Muslims, attracting millions from around the globe each year. This pilgrimage, a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for able-bodied Muslims, involves performing a series of religious rites as prescribed by the Prophet Mohammad. This year, over 1.83 million Muslims participated, including more than 1.6 million from 22 countries and around 222,000 Saudi citizens and residents.
Despite the challenges and the tragic losses, the spirit of Hajj remains a powerful testament to faith and devotion. The global Muslim community continues to honor this sacred journey, even in the face of adversity.
